Baldur's Gate 3 Honour Mode Walkthrough

Honour Mode Guide

Difficulty:Hard7/10

Just a quick note, this is an Honour mode playthrough, not a 100% trophy guide. The point of this guide is to get you through HM. I'll assume you're familiar with the game and not trying HM your first try, but will try to give most details so nothing is missed. In general I won't mention looting unless it's specific gear we need for our build. Loot as much as you can to keep the money flowing, since things are expensive in HM.

The difficulty is largely dependent on your build, gear, the order in which you choose to do things, and which things you skip. There's always the random bad rolls, but with proper preparation, it's not too bad. I've beaten HM a few times, and when I started playing, I had to play on exploration I was so bad. I'm confident with some more knowledge, anyone can do it.

General tips

  • Loot a lot at the start, need to build some wealth
  • You can usually leave 1 character out of range or in camp, then if the other 3 die, rez them with Withers. It's usually not necessary, but some fights I find it to be useful (Inquisitor Wwargaz..) as it lets you kill some of the minions in the fight, then come back at full strength to take on the boss.
  • Use guidance as much as possible, it's free
  • If you run out of camp supplies or just need 1 person to long rest, you can use Withers to respec that person. They will get all their spell slots and health back, then just steal the money back.
  • General buff strategy (will list max level, just start using as you get them):
    • Astarion: Strength potion (hill giant, then cloud giant in act 3) 100% uptime
    • Shadowheart: Aid (cast highest level you can) 100% uptime, Wild Shape - Starry Form: Dragon (100% uptime)
    • Lae'zel: Mage Armour (100% uptime)
Any other buffs (elixirs, etc, I'll mention when you need them)
  • Keep: elixir of fire resistance, elixir of psychic resistance, potion of angelic slumber. They are super specific but will make a few places much easier. Using fire resistance throughout house of hope makes you immune to all the burning, psychic helps with netherbrain.
  • General fight strategy for big fights:
    • Get close as you can sneaking, go into turn based mode, cast twin haste and spirit guardians, then start the fight.
    • Astarion and MC will be doing most of the damage
    • Once you use bow and mystic scoundrel ring, MC uses bonus action to crowd control
    • Shadowheart runs around hitting people with spirit guardians, use radiance of dawn to aoe some orbs
    • Lae'zel can shoot lightning bolts, chain lightning, cantrips, whatever, just try not to lose concentration
  • Respec's are best done when you're at a level that matters. So for example, Astarion we're going to build into Monk 6/Rogue 4/Fighter 2. Once we get to level 7, it doesn't make sense to go 1 level into thief, at that point thief 1 won't add anything, and will actually gimp us. So we will just go Monk 7, Monk 8, and then at 9 respec into Monk 6/Rogue 3. This way we will immediately get the extra bonus action and not waste time with the weaker rogue 1/2 levels. Since you can just steal your money back from Withers, it's not a big deal to respec a few times.
