Baldur's Gate 3
Score 10 / 10Pros
- Story is great, tons of main and side content
- Companions feel more realistic than other games
- Music is peaceful and fits the vibe well
- Combat and Build system have some depth but not overwhelming
- Branching storylines and dynamic companions/npc's add tons of replayability
- Itemization is great. Gearing up and leveling up make you feel powerful
Cons
- Inventory management can be a nightmare
- Some bigger fights can take awhile, since everyone has to take a turn
- Playing multiplayer is fun, but can make the story seem disjointed. Definitely recommend solo play at least once
- The start of act 3 can seem like bad pacing after the ramp up that is act 2, but it picks up again
Conclusion and who is this for
This game is for any RPG lover (as long as you don't absolutely hate turn based combat). I'm not a huge fan of strategy RPGs myself, I've only played Fire Emblem, Gladius, and Final Fantasy Tactics and didn't particularly love any of them. This game's combat is fast and fluid enough, that I don't mind the movement control, whereas I find it tedious in the other "grid" based games.
The story had me hooked the whole time. Most the characters you meet have their own story and plenty to say to you. Like the Witcher 3, the side quests feel meaningful. There's so many items to find to compliment whatever build you're going for, plenty of decisions to make that add to replayability, some that bifurcate the campaign pretty heavily (full dark urge playthrough feels like a different game sometimes).
I can't recommend this game enough to anyone who even slightly enjoys RPGs. I've been playing games for a solid 30 years and this is probably my favorite game of all time. I've easily clocked 800 hours or so. I've written an honour mode guide to help out anyone who finds it daunting, feel free to check it out!
